According to several international organizations like the World Health Organization, there is a global sense of urgency in the discovery and production of new antimicrobial compounds because of the emergence or reemergence of microbial pathogens that are resistant to current antibiotics.  With the intent to discover novel microorganisms and their bioactive natural products (BNPs) for their potential activity against old and new pathogens, the MICRO lab aim to identify microorganisms from forest soil and marine ecological niches that produce BNPs.  To this end, our research integrates applied and environmental microbiology methods with cellular and molecular biology techniques. Targeted molecules include antibacterial and antifungal agents.
